Peter Vaughan dies aged 93

Peter Vaughan has passed away at the age of 93. The actor, who starred in Game of Thrones, died with his family by his side on Tuesday morning.

Confirming the news in a statement, his agent Sally Long-Innes said: "This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him."

Throughout his 75 year career Peter worked alongside the likes of Frank Sinatra and Ronnie Barker, and had roles in TV shows , and .

However it was his roles as Maester Aemon Targaryen in and Harry Grout in BBC sitcom for which he was best known. The 93-year-old starred in the HBO drama for five years until his character was killed off, and told the that he was in "semi-retirement".

"But you never know, I could do a Sinatra and come back again," he said.

When the news of Peter's death was announced on Tuesday afternoon some celebrities and colleagues of Peter's took to Twitter to share their condolences.

producer and writer Bryan Cogman tweeted: "Rest in Peace to our own Maester Aemon, Peter Vaughan, who passed away this morning at age 93. Truly an honor to have known him."

Kathy Burke shared a photo of the actor in adding a heart emoticon and the message: "Beautiful Peter Vaughan."

Meanwhile actress Leonie Mellinger wrote: "#PeterVaughan lovely man and fine actor. Fond memories of filming 'Lovejoy' with him as my father. RIP."

Peter was due to talk about his career in a live interview called at the Museum of Comedy on 18 December.
