Shelson Jules, of Waltham, also known as JJ to some, was found suffering from gunshot wounds on Monday, May 22 on Lyman Street in Waltham. The young man was transported to Lahey Hospital where he was pronounced dead, as reported by Daily Voice.
In the aftermath of Jules's death, his community rallied together and donated over $15,000 to support his family in only one day.
"This tragedy has impacted everyone in Shelson's community: family, friends, loved ones, even strangers who have only heard how kind and compassionate Shelson was," reads the GoFundMe campaign description.
Jules emigrated from Haiti to America at 11 years old after suffering losses in the 2010 earthquake, according to the GoFundMe.
After graduating high school, Jules, who was extremely committed to his family, attended UMass Boston for a few years before leaving to help support his family.
He was working to save up and help his family buy a new home.
The family man was a devoted partner to his girlfriend of two years, Alex. She and her family are "grieving the loss of his brightness, presence, and humor," the fundraiser said.
He discovered his love of cats through spending time with Alex's elderly cat and was only a week away from adopting a feline of his own.
"Shelson was spontaneous, gentle, generous, dedicated, kind, loving, patient, playful, sweet, and silly," the GoFundMe read.
Money raised through the GoFundMe will go towards funeral costs and to help the family during their time of grief, the campaign description says.
