David watched the 1941 film, Blood and Sand when he was 14 years old. He developed an interest in acting as opposed to inheriting his father's business. He followed this dream by joining the theatre. At the time, he used the name Al Hedison. He joined Brown University where he became an active member of the Sock and Buskin Players. Later, he relocated to New York City where he joined the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre to study. Martha Graham and Sanford Meisner were his classmates in the theatre school. He also took classes at the Actors Studios together with Lee Strasberg.

Acting career

David began his acting career as a trained professional at the Newport Casino Theatre. He took various roles in different plays and executed each character excellently. In the New York Theatre, two of his most popular plays were Much Ado About Nothing in 1952 and A Month in the Country in 1956. The latter was directed by Michael Redgrave, and it ran for 48 performances. David was named one of the most promising theatre personalities of the 1955-56 season.

Soon, his work was recognised by numerous people. He even won the award of Most Promising Young Actor during the Barter Theatre Awards. The award opened a new opportunity for him to work at a Virginia-based theatre. He also worked at a radio station in North Carolina and appeared on stage in Pittsburgh.

Personal life, marriage and death

After he finished filming the television series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, David relocated to London, United Kingdom. He lived in London for two years because he was in love with the city at the time. He moved back to the United States of America after the two years and admitted that securing acting jobs after his return was difficult.

On the 29th of June 1968, David married the love of his life Bridget Hedison in London. The couple gave birth to two children, Alexandra Hedison and Serena Hedison. Alexandra is an actress, photographer and director while Serena is an editor and producer. David Hedison wife died on the 22nd of February 2016 after battling breast cancer.
